(October 2020)
The American Association of Insurance Services (AAIS) Commercial Umbrella Liability Coverage and Commercial Excess/Umbrella Liability Coverage eligibility criteria are very broad.
Any business is eligible, but that business must have underlying coverage liability for premises/operations, products/completed work, and other liability coverages. AAIS or other similar liability coverage forms and policies must write those coverages.
AAIS does not write primary automobile coverage at the present time. As a result, if there is an automobile exposure, each insurance company that writes the umbrella or excess coverage must determine the nature and extent of the automobile exposure and underlying coverage and decide as to its acceptability.
Note: It is always good to remember that each
insurance company establishes its own criteria for acceptability.
